NFL Week 6 Weather Conditions
Moderate rain, snow, and wind probably don’t have as much of an effect on players as you would expect, but extreme conditions and wind gusts can have a huge effect. Weather hasn’t been much of a factor in many games until this point, but we saw how the remnants of Hurricane Matthew created windy conditions in Baltimore that significantly impacted the flow of that game and held Kirk Cousins and Joe Flacco to only 470 passing yards on a whopping 87 combined pass attempts. We’re also getting into the winter months which can create some pretty gnarly conditions on the field so we’ll be making this a weekly feature.
Here are the weather conditions for all outdoor NFL games in Week 6 and the potential fantasy impact:
Cincinnati Bengals at New England Patriots
1:00PM ET
Gillette Stadium
Foxboro, Massachusetts
Temp: 68°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 13 mph
Wind Gusts: 22 mph
Fantasy Impact: 22 mph gusts aren’t bad, but they’re not great either. The only player I would knock down a notch is Chris Hogan, but this game is a green light for all the studs on both teams.
San Francisco 49ers at Buffalo Bills
1:00PM ET
New Era Field
Orchard Park, New York
Temp: 65°
Precipitation: 50% chance of light rain
Wind: 16 mph
Wind Gusts: 29 mph
Fantasy Impact: I live in Buffalo and I thought Sunday was supposed to be nice, but it looks like the forecast changed a bit. The rain isn’t concerning, but the high winds and gusts will not be good for Tyrod Taylor or Colin Kaepernick. The RBs should be even more utilized than normal. Charles Clay and Jeremy Kerley get slight bumps.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Chicago Bears
1:00PM ET
Soldier Field
Chicago, Illinois
Temp: 68°
Precipitation: 52%
Wind: 9 mph
Wind Gusts: 15 mph
Fantasy Impact: The weather during the game should be fine, but Soldier Field was ranked the third-worst playing surface by Sports Illustrated last year and rains are expected during the morning and through the early afternoon. I wouldn’t go crazy changing any lineups, but if you’re split between Jordan Howard and another back, I would go with the other back.
Pittsburgh Steelers at Miami Dolphins
1:00PM ET
Hard Rock Stadium
Miami Gardens, Florida
Temp: 84°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 15 mph
Wind Gusts: 18 mph
Fantasy Impact: None, but as winter approaches up north, I wish I was down there. Green light for all players.
Baltimore Ravens at New York Giants
1:00PM ET
MetLife Stadium
East Rutherford, New Jersey
Temp: 68°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 13 mph
Wind Gusts: 20 mph
Fantasy Impact: None
Philadelphia Eagles at Washington Redskins
1:00PM ET
FedEx Field
Hyattsville, Maryland
Temp: 70°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 8 mph
Wind Gusts: 12 mph
Fantasy Impact: None
Cleveland Browns at Tennessee Titans
1:00PM ET
Nissan Stadium
Nashville, Tennessee
Temp: 77°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 9mph
Wind Gusts: 14mph
Fantasy Impact: None
Kansas City Chiefs at Oakland Raiders
4:05PM ET
Oakland Coliseum
Oakland, California
Temp: 64°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 23 mph
Wind Gusts: 31 mph
Fantasy Impact: The winds are going to get progressively stronger during the game. I was expecting a pretty high-scoring affair, but the winds may keep scoring in check. Alex Smith hardly ever throws downfield, but if Kansas City grinds out any sort of lead, they may not throw very much. If you can crack the DeAndre Washington-Jalen Richard puzzle, you may be in for a nice surprise. Jamaal Charles is “safe” from the weather, but no one really knows how much he’ll be on the field. Derek Carr gets a downgrade, which trickles down to Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree.
Dallas Cowboys at Green Bay Packers
4:25PM ET
Lambeau Field
Green Bay, Wisconsin
Temp: 67°
Precipitation: None
Wind: 8 mph
Wind Gusts: 9 mph
Fantasy Impact: None
Atlanta Falcons at Seattle Seahawks
4:25PM ET
CenturyLink Stadium
Seattle, Washington
Temp: 57°
Precipitation: Negligible
Wind: 13 mph
Wind Gusts: 28 mph
Fantasy Impact: CenturyLink Stadium is partially covered shielding the field from most winds, but the stadium lies North-South and the winds are expected to be northerly. Winds in and of themselves aren’t necessarily bad, but gusts in excess of 25 mph could make throwing down-field nearly impossible even with the wind. Expect both teams to grind it out on the ground and keep passes closer to the line of scrimmage to open up the game. Winds will die down throughout the game so both teams may be able to open it up more in the second half.
Russell Wilson may be more likely to scramble, which may negate any negative effects the wind would have on his fantasy stats. He should continue to target Jimmy Graham, but this might not be the week Doug Baldwin explodes unless he does it with yards after the catch. Matt Ryan and Julio Jones may be the big losers on the Atlanta side. Christine Michael, Devonta Freeman, and Tevin Coleman all get a bump up.
