Welcome back to the TPRR report. As a refresher, Targets Per Route Run, or TPRR, is a metric that quantifies a player’s efficiency in earning targets. For wide receivers, a target is the most important underlying metric to predict consistent fantasy output, so a player’s ability to earn these targets at a high rate is key. Historically, a 20% TPRR is a good minimum threshold we want to see, and the best of the best consistently see TPRRs north of 30%.

Let’s take a look at this week’s leaders. TPRR is only part of the story, and we’re gradually shifting toward focusing on season-long trends over one-off performances. As you may have noticed, everyone is hurt.

But we press on. Let’s take a look at last week’s TPRR leaders.

Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season after tearing both his MCL and ACL in Week 7, and Deebo Samuel‘s Week 8 isn’t a sure thing after pneumonia-like symptoms landed him in the hospital. The last time the 49ers were missing two pass catchers, Jauan Jennings scored three touchdowns. Despite taking a back seat in recent weeks, Jennings’ TPRR for the season is a solid 24.5%, so he’s the best bet to pick up the slack alongside George Kittle (24% TPRR on 174 routes in 2024). Our editor-in-chief Kyle Borgognoni notes that the absence of Christian McCaffrey has correlated with the 49ers targeting WRs at a 66% rate. Coincidence? I think not.

Amari Cooper

You won’t find Amari Cooper on the list above because he ran only 12 routes in Week 7, however, he saw five targets a.k.a. 42% TPRR. As we noted last week, Cooper’s addition may limit the appeal of Keon Coleman and Khalil Shakir to flex status, but the offense gets an overall boost and is less likely to bottom out in a given week. Coleman, Shakir, and Dalton Kincaid all had TPRRs north of 20% on 20+ routes run against Tennessee.

Ups and Downs, Just Downs.

Retreading last week’s article, we can’t overlook Josh Downs‘ top-three TPRR ranking for the season (full list below), but Anthony Richardson‘s poor passing performances relegate him to a risky start. The best news for Josh Downs would be Joe Flacco under center.

Let’s Get Crazy, Cleveland Browns Edition

Deshaun Watson is out. Jameis Winston is in. While I’m hesitant to trust anyone on the Browns’ offense, the fact remains that they have to play in Week 8. That means there will be 11 players on the field, and I don’t expect Cleveland to be able to establish the run and keep up with Lamar Jackson. That means they’ll be throwing. David Njoku should be started anyway, and Cedric Tillman is worth a flyer for WR-needy teams.

“That’s Why I’m Well Compensated”

Mike Tomlin decided to move to Russell Wilson, despite Justin Fields overseeing a 4-2 record for the Steelers. And boy, did it work out in Week 7. Pickens (31% TPRR) benefitted from the switch and is a must-start in Week 8 before Pittsburgh hits their Week 9 bye.
