There are many reasons why I’m not a fan of carrying your fantasy championship into Week 17 for season long leagues. Teams that have already clinched might rest their starters, a.k.a many of your best players. Teams that have missed the playoffs might feel the need to keep their best players off the field in favor of evaluating younger talent behind them (E.J. Manuel starting over Tyrod Taylor for example). Suddenly players who have been completely irrelevant this season might be in for a huge workload at the expense of much better players that got you this far. That said, for all the reasons that I don’t like Week 17 for season long, I LOVE it for DFS, especially GPP tournaments. Each week in this Wednesday article we try to bring you high upside players who are budget friendly. The types of picks that can set your lineup apart from the masses and make the difference for whether or not you can fit the more expensive plays into your lineup while staying under the salary cap. So check them out, read our explanations and see if any of us can convince you to go with our pick to help round out your FanDuel GPP rosters.
WR J.J. Nelson @ LA, $5300
“With Arizona out of playoff contention, Bruce Arians continues to showcase what the future has in store for the Cardinals and the weapons they truly have. Continuing his late-season rise, J.J. Nelson has the opportunity to continue to put up huge numbers against a Rams defense that’s allowed 11 touchdowns from WRs over the last 6 games.”
-Brandon Sanders, @brandontsanders
WR Golden Tate vs GB, $5700
“Before receiving only 6 targets against Dallas, Tate had seen double-digit targets in three straight. He has a great matchup at home against Green Bay. Don’t forget it was against Green Bay that Marvin Jones went off for over 200 yards and 2 TDs. That won’t happen again so those fantasy points are up for grabs.”
-Eric Ludwig, @FF_Gouge
TE Dennis Pitta @ CIN, $4700
“In an odd trend, Dennis Pitta is averaging 3 more targets per game on the road than at home (8.5 to 5.5). Now, Pitta takes his bromance with Joe Flacco on the road to face a Cincinnati defense that allows the 4th most fantasy points to the TE position. Similar to my Charles Clay reasoning last week, Pitta is a bargain at $4,700 so you basically have nothing to lose at a position that is uncertain at best and lacking high-end options.”
-Keaton Denlay, @keatondenlay
RB Fitzgerald Toussaint vs CLE, $4500
Although Toussaint admittedly does not get paid as well as the two running backs ahead of him in Pittsburgh, he does save a ton of money on laundry detergent because his uniform almost never gets dirty. When you play behind Le’Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams, you just don’t get to see the field very often. The one exception, Week 17 against the Browns after your team has already clinched their playoff berth. Opportunity plus a great match-up is the simple reason that I love him this week for the bare minimum price of $4500. The Steelers would be foolish to risk Bell’s health by putting him out there and D-Will has barely been active while nursing a knee injury. I truly believe that it’s going to be the Toussaint show this week and that he’s in line for 30+ touches against the worst run defense in professional football.
