DK Metcalf has been in the news a lot lately. First, for his insane diet and workout routine making headlines. Second, for his name being attached to trade rumors surrounding the superstar WR. The New York Jets reportedly offered the #10 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft for Metcalf but Seattle quickly declined the trade. GM John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll have said they “intend for him to be with us,” but they said the same thing about Russell Wilson before he was traded to the Broncos a few weeks ago. After trading Wilson and releasing star LB Bobby Wagner, Seattle is clearly in the middle of a rebuild, and DK Metcalf is up for a new contract next after the final year of his rookie deal expires after the 2022 season. In an off-season where we’ve seen Davante Adams, Tyreek Hill and Stefon Diggs reset the WR market, Metcalf, who is just 24 years old, will look to cash in sooner than later. Seattle just gave Tyler Lockett a four-year, $69 million extension last year, and if they were to hold onto Metcalf, it’d be a ton of money to invest into the WR room for an offense that tends to prefer to establish the run under Pete Carroll.

Metcalf was taken in the 2nd round of the 2019 NFL Draft, and in his three years with Seattle, he’s already eclipsed 3,000 receiving yards and has banked back-to-back double digit TD campaigns. He has more combined yards and touchdowns than fellow 2019 NFL Draftees Terry McLaurin, Deebo Samuel, and A.J. Brown. From a fantasy perspective, Metcalf has banked WR7 and WR12 finishes in each of the last two years while seeing just 129 targets in those two seasons as he’s thrived on big plays and efficiency from Russell Wilson. Should Metcalf stay in Seattle with Drew Lock, it’s difficult to see him replicating those numbers. However, if he lands with a team like the Chiefs or the Packers, who have elite QB play and opportunity available, Metcalf has the ceiling to be a perennial top 5 fantasy WR. For now, he remains a Seahawk, but this is a situation we’re watching closely.
