2026 DFS Contest Selection for Any Budget (Fantasy Football)
Hilarious, my father was a financial advisor. Like the preacher’s daughter adage, I went the opposite direction and built a life around DFS, Betting, and Best Ball. Take your Roth IRA and shove it! (Kidding, definitely get one and add to it each year with winnings). But I don’t need my six-year-old son looking at me one day saying, “Dad, you should have played more cash instead of GPPs. You know…so I can go to college.”
This article lays out a process built around grinding toward a 1% to 10% long-term return instead of depending on one massive GPP win. If we hit one along the way, great. But a repeatable process has to come first.

Bankroll Management
No matter how much ball you know, Admiral Variance is still going to kick you in the groin. That is why you set limits before the week starts. First, decide whether you want a weekly budget or a slate budget.
Weekly Budget: A fixed dollar cap for the entire DFS week.
- $100 for Week 1: $20 TNF, $60 Main Slate, $20 MNF.
- Pro: You can put more money behind your strongest slates without exceeding your weekly cap.
- Con: That flexibility can make it easier to chase losses on SNF or MNF.
Slate Budget: A predetermined percentage of your bankroll assigned to each slate.
- 5% TNF, 10% Main Slate, 5% SNF, and/or 5% MNF.
- Pro: Your entries automatically decrease during a downswing and increase when running hot.
- Con: Playing every slate could put 25% of your bankroll in action during one week.
Neither method is automatically safer. A weekly budget might lead to chasing, while a slate budget might create more total exposure. Personally, I am a 10% player per slate, but that does not mean I play every slate. Selectivity is what keeps an aggressive approach from becoming reckless.
Contest Selection
Once you know how much money you are deploying, do not immediately start clicking ENTER.
Judge every contest by four things:
1. How many bullets do you have?
A “bullet” is one lineup entry. Match the contest limit to the number of intentional lineups you want to build. One lineup fits naturally in a single entry, three lineups fit a three max, and 20 lineups fit a 20 max.
Consider: If I’m playing an MME, I want to max it. If maxing it doesn’t fit the budget, I would rather move down to a contest where I can use the full entry limit.
2. How many lineups must you beat?
A $1 contest against 100,000 entries is still a massive-field tournament, even if the entry fee feels harmless. The more lineups in the contest, the harder it becomes to reach a meaningful payout.
Consider: As your budget grows, buy better contests before buying more lottery tickets. Smaller-field wins may not be screenshot sexy, but they are much easier to attain.
3. How perfect does your lineup need to be?
A fundamentally strong lineup can win a smaller single-entry contest. Beating 10,000-plus lineups usually requires tail-end outcomes and almost everything breaking correctly.
Consider: A good lineup can win a small field. A massive field usually demands an outlier.
4. How much is a good finish actually worth?
First place is the window dressing, but the full payout structure is what matters. Look at what a min cash pays, what a top 10% finish returns, where the major payout jumps occur, and how much of the prize pool goes to first place.
Consider: Flatter contests reward more good lineups. Top-heavy contests require an exceptional finish before the payout becomes meaningful.

DFS Portfolio by Budget
The four amounts below are slate budgets, not total bankrolls or new deposits you need every Sunday. For purposes of this article, I will put together contests based on what I recommend for Week 1. A $25 budget simply means putting up to $25 into play on that slate, then recycling whatever comes back into the same DFS bankroll.
Across 18 main slates, that $25 budget can create up to $450 in entry volume without requiring $450 in deposits. That is bankroll turnover, not free money. If your bankroll drops, your slate budget should drop with it.
You do not need a minimum amount to use a real process. A $25 portfolio is not less serious than a $1,000 portfolio. More money simply gives you access to higher buy-ins, smaller fields, and better contest structures. The right budget is one you can still follow after a bad Sunday.
Personal note: I have a hard-and-fast rule never to deploy more than 10% of account funds on a platform for any slate. If I have moved money out of that account that week for bills or whatever, so be it. Parameters are a good thing in DFS for long-term success.
Cash vs GPP
The % allocation depends on who you ask. I am still not sure of the “official” percentage, but usually it is between 60-80% cash for serious players. Week 1 is cray cray, so I drop cash to 60%ish and then increase it later when we get more info.

These are targets, not accounting rules. Let the actual lobby move the allocation by a few dollars rather than entering a worse contest just to hit an exact percentage.

The Millys: Know What You Are Buying
FanDuel
If you are ever going to take your Milly shot, FanDuel is giving you a pretty good reason to do it in Week 1. FD is giving back every $5 Week 1 Sunday Million entry that does not cash as Fantasy Bonus. The catch: those bonus funds must be used within 7 days.
That materially changes the downside. It is still a massive-field tournament with 36% of the entire prize pool going to first, but this is one of the rare weeks where I am more willing to allocate a small piece of the GPP budget to the Milly.
Personal Note: I am maxing this. I will have enough FanDuel volume over the next seven days to use every dollar of bonus funds, so this is a no-brainer. If you already plan to play Week 2 on FanDuel, take the shot. Your normal slate budget should not keep you from using a promo this strong.
DraftKings
Do not confuse a cheap entry fee with a good contest. The Week 1 Milly is expected to have more than 800,000 lineups, meaning your $5 is buying access to one of the highest-variance contests on the slate. If you play it, assume the overwhelming majority of your entries are going to lose (because they will). The entire reason to enter is the extreme right-tail outcome.
Personal Note: I am maxing this, but not because I think it is a good contest. If I am going to take a shot at a field this large, I want the full entry set and multiple lineup constructions working for me at $5 a pop. It is for entertainment only, and I have been saving this summer to account for it.
