Unfortunately, the game that was scheduled to be played in New Orleans got pushed to Jacksonville, FL as recovery efforts continue following Hurricane Ida. Outside of that, the weather looks great to open up the 2021 season.

Weather Primer

People tend to overreact to the weather when it comes to fantasy football. Most of the time, inclement weather is good to know about as a sort of tie-break. Rarely does the weather get to the point where you should start sitting stud players. It’s like changing an answer on a test. You should always go with your first instinct unless you know for sure your original answer was wrong.

As far as weather conditions to look out for, it’s probably not what you think. Rain and snow can be an issue, but most stadiums are equipped with start-of-the-art drainage systems and heated surfaces. The single biggest weather factor to track is the wind.

Winds in excess of 20 mph(sustained) start to heavily influence the passing game. We saw a few games last year with winds higher than 20 mph including Week 8 where Derek Carr and Baker Mayfield combined for less than 250 passing yards and only one TD in high winds. You might want to avoid kickers in games with winds above 18 mph.

The other factor is temperature, but the temperature is tricky. Guys like Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Josh Allen won’t be affected by sub 30° weather. Guys like Jared Goff struggle in colder climates(good luck in Chicago and Green Bay). It seems to take QBs that come from warmer climates a little time to adjust to freezing temperatures. I’ll be curious to see how Trevor Lawrence handles back-to-back weeks at New York Jets and at New England in Weeks 15 and 16. Mac Jones might struggle if he gets hit with an early game in bitter cold conditions before getting adjusted to the northern climate.

Updates

This article will be updated leading up to the games right in this section and below. I’ll also post updates here on Sunday morning with a final update around 12:30 pm ET if necessary.

Update: We might see some sporadic rain during the PIT@BUF game towards the beginning and end of the game. Winds got a touch worse with sustained winds up to 17 mph.

Catch ‘SUNDAY LIVE’ at Noon ET —  Mike “The Fantasy Hitman” Wright will be answering start/sit questions, and covering injury updates for Week 1.

Fantasy Impact: It initially looked like gusty conditions and rain would be present at kickoff and taper off as the game progressed. There’s good news and bad news. There’s scattered showers in the area, but it looks like the rain will hold off until just after the game. The bigger concern are the winds that will be 17 mph sustained. These winds still aren’t high enough to have a definitive fantasy affect on the game, but I would avoid Tyler Bass and Chris Boswell.
