Week 1 GPP Plays on DraftKings
Drew Brees vs. Tampa Bay $6,800
Brees is in the absolute smash spot and is my top option in both cash and GPPs. Despite the narrative, Brees once again was elite last season finishing fourth in passing yards (4,334) and top four in a plethora of advanced passing statistics per Pro Football Focus. Brees gets to play at home and gets a Buccaneers defense that ranked dead last in passing yards allowed and 31st in Pass DVOA last year. Tampa Bay was bad against the run last season as well but they invested heavily in their front seven while remaining stagnant in the secondary, creating a funnel situation toward the pass. Then there are the separate suspensions which both increase Brees’ upside. With Mark Ingram suspended, look for the Saints to take to the air more and with Jameis Winston suspended, Tampa Bay projects to struggle on offense which will constantly put the ball back in Brees’ hands. Big game incoming.
Ben Roethlisberger at Cleveland $6,600
Roethlisberger’s ownership likely will be depressed since he’s playing on the road and his Home/Road split differences are well known. That’s intriguing since QB1 overall of the week is absolutely within Big Ben’s range of outcomes. It’s hard not to salivate at the talent of Pittsburgh’s skill position players and get excited for the passing game since Big Ben gets to throw to Antonio Brown, Le’Veon Bell, JuJu Smith-Schuster, and second-round pick James Washington. And unlike in years past where there was the fear of a blowout in this spot, the Browns project to be a much better team this season and get to face the Steelers at home. Add in Bell’s continued holdout and Roethlisberger projects to throw a lot in this game. Look for him to find success against a Browns’ defense that ranked 19th in passing yards allowed per game and 26th in Pass DVOA in 2017.
