Biggest Week 9 Studs and Stinkers (Fantasy Football)
With Week 9 mostly in the books, The Fantasy Footballers review and react to the Studs & Duds performances on the latest episode. Here, I’ll highlight the best and worst fantasy finishes from Week 9 and list their upcoming schedule. Note that all fantasy points are in the 0.5-point scoring format. Biggest Studs
Russell Wilson, QB Seahawks
Week 9 vs TB: 29/43 for 378 passing yards & 5 TD | 1 rush for 21 yards
Upcoming Schedule: @SF, BYE, @PHI, MIN
Wilson recorded the tenth highest score of any offensive player so far this season. He now owns two of the four best QB performances (fantasy) in 2019. Wilson remains one of the league’s best QBs and has proven to be an excellent fantasy player this season. After a 2018 season with zero games of 40+ pass attempts, Wilson now has 3 such games so far in 2019. Wilson has a tough matchup next week against the 49ers, but he remains a must-start at the position.
Tyler Lockett, WR Seahawks
Week 9 vs TB: 13 receptions for 152 yards & 2 TD on 18 targets
Upcoming Schedule: @SF, BYE, @PHI, MIN
Lockett put up his best game of the season on Sunday, proving to once again be Wilson’s best receiving option, although Metcalf had a monster game as well. Lockett is a stud wide receiver who has put up relatively inconsistent numbers so far this season. He has five games with six or fewer targets. He also has three games with 12+ targets. He provides a pretty safe floor of low double-digit points and always has the potential to explode. However, he has only logged two great games through nine games of the season. I would personally try to trade Lockett high after this week…You could probably acquire someone like Keenan Allen plus another valuable piece for Lockett.
Kenyan Drake
Week 9 vs SF: 15 rushes for 110 yards & 1 TD | 4 receptions for 52 yards | 2pt conv
Upcoming Schedule: @TB, @SF, BYE, LAR
Drake is a talented player who finally got the opportunity to produce in a decent offense (sorry Dolphins fans). Drake was traded mid-week and had to face an elite 49ers defense, so many experts projected just a mediocre week at best. Drake proved us wrong. Drake became the third Cardinals RB to put up 25+ fantasy points this season, further muddying the water. I expect David Johnson to take back the workhorse role when healthy, but now there are two other explosive options behind DJ in the offense. It’ll be interesting to see Drake’s usage moving forward as well as Chase Edmonds when he returns from injury. Once healthy, I project DJ will still get roughly 20 touches a game while Drake or Edmonds get about 10. Regardless, there are a lot of question marks about the Cardinals running backs…
Christian McCaffrey
Week 9 vs TEN: 24 rushes for 146 yards & 2 TD | 3 receptions for 20 yards & 1 TD
Upcoming Schedule: @GB, ATL, @NO, WAS
CMC now has three of the eight best RB performances so far in 2019. He’s a cheat code.
Biggest Stinkers
Aaron Jones, RB Packers
Week 9 @ LAC: 8 rushes for 30 yards | 1 reception for -1 yards on 4 targets
Upcoming Schedule: CAR, BYE, @SF, @NYG
Jones disappointed owners in a week where the entire Packers offense looked weak. He barely had more touches (nine) than Jamaal Williams (eight) but was targeted less in the passing game. Better weeks are ahead, especially versus a porous Carolina run defense that ranks seventh-worst against the RB position.
D.J. Chark, WR Jaguars
Week 9 vs HOU: 4 receptions for 32 yards on 9 targets
Upcoming Schedule: BYE, @IND, @TEN, TB
Chark let fantasy owners down in the juiciest matchup imaginable, as the Texans allowed the most fantasy points per game to wide receivers through Week 8. He still received the most targets on the Jaguars, but Gardner Minshew struggled with turnovers. Chark’s future is in question with a potential quarterback change to Nick Foles following the Week 10 bye. Will Foles start Week 11? Will Foles have the same rapport with Chark that Minshew did? Will Foles even be an improvement to the Jaguars offense? While there are a lot of unanswered questions, I’m personally optimistic about Chark for the remainder of 2019.
Mark Andrews, TE Ravens
Week 9 vs NE: 2 receptions for 21 yards on 3 targets
Upcoming Schedule: @CIN, HOU, @LAR, SF
We all suspected a poor week from Andrews, but few had other options at a thin TE position. It is surprising to see Nick Boyle as the most targeted TE Sunday night, ending the night with 5/27/1. Andrews now has two stinkers in a row. Andrews has a difficult upcoming schedule against the Bengals (4th fewest pts allowed to TE), Texans (10th), Rams (20th), and 49ers (fewest in NFL). I still expect Andrews to bounce back, but it is certainly concerning to see that Lamar Jackson leans on the run in competitive games, limiting Andrews’ production.
