Oh, this week was a scary one for fantasy football. Between the injuries, questionable designations, and uncertainty surrounding some of the league’s biggest names, fantasy managers had plenty of reasons to be nervous heading into the weekend.

But I have to give credit where credit is due. Players like Terry McLaurin, Jayden Daniels, Ja’Marr Chase,  Mike Evans, and others who were dealing with injuries that could have derailed their entire seasons but managed to get back onto the field and put together some impressive performances, both in real football and fantasy, deserve recognition.

Of course, not every player gave fantasy managers that same sigh of relief. With another unpredictable week behind us, let’s get into the biggest overachievers and underperformers for Week 6.

🏅 Overachiever: Isaiah Likely (TE)

I actually had the pleasure of watching this one unfold in person at the Giants-Commanders game, which is worth mentioning for several reasons, but especially because of how often Jameis Winston was looking Isaiah Likely’s way. I swear, every time Winston dropped back to throw, he was looking for No. 9. Likely caught 11 of his 13 targets for 94 yards and two TDs in Sunday’s 27-27 tie against the Commanders.

And despite my frustrations as a Commanders fan with some of the officiating decisions throughout the game, I have to give Likely his flowers. The weather was absolutely miserable, which makes his 32.4 full-PPR fantasy points all the more impressive. Seriously, putting up those kinds of numbers in conditions like that is ridiculous, and he deserves a proper round of applause.

I also have to give Mike some credit here because Likely was one of his “must-starts” for Week 5, and boy, did that prediction pay off. Likely did not just exceed expectations. He absolutely crushed them, earning himself a well-deserved spot among this week’s biggest overachievers.

📉 Underperformer: Michael Wilson (WR)

Michael Wilson, or as my boyfriend previously liked to call him, his shining star. Unfortunately, even the brightest stars can lose their shine, and this past weekend, Wilson was barely visible in the fantasy football universe.

Now, the only reason Wilson is making an appearance in the underperformer section is because of how impressive he has been over the past two weeks. After putting together back-to-back strong performances, expectations were understandably high heading into this matchup, especially with Marvin Harrison Jr. sidelined and Wilson stepping into the clear WR1 role. Throw in a Lions defense that has been struggling against the pass, and there was plenty of reason to believe Wilson was in for another big afternoon.

Unfortunately, he did not exactly rise to the occasion. Wilson caught just four of his seven targets for an underwhelming 30 yards in the Cardinals’ 45-21 loss to the Lions. He recorded his second-lowest reception and receiving yardage totals of the season, finishing with just seven full-PPR fantasy points.

And look, seven points might not seem like a complete disaster, but considering Wilson’s recent performances and the opportunity he had in front of him, this was pretty disappointing. However, with Marvin Harrison Jr. reportedly traded to the Texans earlier on Sunday, Wilson now has one less player competing for targets from Jacoby Brissett moving forward.

So while our shining star may have dimmed a little this weekend, there is still reason to believe he can find his way back into the spotlight. But I get it. When you are expecting a player to shine, seven points is not exactly the kind of star power we had in mind.

🏅 Overachiever: Bucky Irving (RB)

Okay, now before I get into this performance, I need to put my excitement into perspective. I was on vacation in Florida last week, watching Thursday night’s game from a sports bar at Universal CityWalk, so I was already having the time of my life. Then Bucky Irving goes out there looking like Bijan Robinson, and as someone who has him in their fantasy lineup, I was just over the moon.

After putting up a whopping six fantasy points the week before, Irving decided to make it up to us by dropping 32 full-PPR fantasy points. He finished with over 160 total yards and two TDs, practically carrying the Buccaneers to victory on his own. Talk about a comeback.

Now, Irving has certainly had his ups and downs this season, and trusting him in your lineup hasn’t always been the most rewarding experience. But this was exactly the kind of performance fantasy managers have been waiting for. Going from six points one week to 32 the next is quite the turnaround, and I certainly wasn’t complaining.

If this is the version of Bucky Irving we are going to see moving forward, I cannot wait to see what he has in store for the rest of the season. But I have to say, nothing will beat watching him put on that kind of performance while sitting at a sports bar with over 100 TVs at Universal CityWalk on vacation.

📉 Underperformer: Romeo Doubs (WR)

Romeo Doubs was coming off a great performance last week, and naturally, fantasy managers, myself included, were feeling pretty good about him heading into this matchup. So you can imagine my disappointment when Doubs finished with just 2.6 full-PPR fantasy points.

As Sleeper so perfectly put it, Doubs “faded into the background,” and frankly, I think that might have been an understatement.

Here is what makes this performance particularly frustrating. Six of his teammates caught at least three passes from Drake Maye this past weekend, and Maye himself had a fantastic game. The Patriots cruised to a 45-17 victory; Maye threw four TD passes, and somehow, Doubs only managed to catch one of three targets for 16 yards.

Seriously, how does your QB throw four TDs, your team put up 45 points, and a WR who saw nine targets the week before somehow walk away with just ONE catch? Coming off a performance of more than 20 full-PPR fantasy points, Doubs had given fantasy managers plenty of reason to believe he could carry that momentum into this matchup. Instead, we watched the Patriots’ offense put on an absolute show while Doubs barely participated.

Still, I am cautiously optimistic that Doubs can bounce back and find his way into the end zone when the Patriots take on the Jets in Week 6.
